Caleb Williams displays real life Madden highlights in Bears' preseason win
If there was one word to describe Caleb Williams in the Chicago Bears’ 27-3 preseason win over the Cincinnati Bengals, it would be “unreal.”.
If the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft didn’t already prove he’s the real deal through the first two preseason games, he left no doubt on Saturday showcasing his ability to emphasize in the pocket and make plays. With Madden-esque moves, the former USC star displayed his magic in two plays that had social media going out of their mind and Bears fans everywhere gloating about their latest franchise quarterback hope.
Caleb Williams dazzles and breaks the Internet in two plays
It all happened late in the first half of the Bears third preseason matchup. Williams, looking much like the Patrick Mahomes comparison he was tagged with entering the draft, manipulated the pocket to hit fellow rookie Rome Odunze for a 45-yard gain that showcased his ability to escape pressure in the pocket and deliver a perfect ball to the No. 9 overall pick.
To say this play rocked the stadium and social media is an understatement:
Bears’ head coach Matt Eberflus was obviously thrilled about what his rookie QB showcased on Saturday, but he’s seen it before.
“I’ve seen [Williams] do that a few times in practice,” Eberflus said, via the team’s official website. “Obviously very talented throwing on the move and throwing to his left, so it was really good, and Rome did a good job of tracking the ball.”
The rookie duo nearly connected for another magic like play in that same drive as Williams again escaped pressure to hit Odunze in the back of the end zone, but the wide receiver was out of bounds on the play.
A couple plays later, the magic man displayed great mobility again in scrambling in the pocket, juking defenders and eventually scampering his way into the end zone.
In two plays Caleb Williams broke the Internet and had the NFL world buzzing about his ability and just how good he will be at the next level, even as a rookie. Yes, jus the preseason, but plays like that are more about the talent at hand and his poise as a quarterback. It is scary if you were a fan of another NFC North team watching.
"He had a nice professional day by a quarterback," Eberflus continued. "It's not always going to be rosy. You're not going to make all your completions, make big chunk plays to start out. I saw operation that was good: before the snap, in and out of the huddle, really good communicating, the cadence was good. I thought his flow of the game was really nice. I also thought his disposition when he had a little adversity on the sideline was excellent. Body language, demeanor never changed. He was always in there just working through the next one."
In all, Williams was an absolute cheat code in displaying every element of what made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. It will be fun to watch him continue the magic.
