The Miami Dolphins' focus for the 2024 NFL Draft seems to strengthen their defense. With the No. 27 pick, the Miami Dolphins select Illinois DL Jer'Zhan Newton, known for his explosiveness and first-step quickness.
Newton, who was recruited by ESPN as a 3-star recruit and given a 3-star rating by 247 Sports, attended Clearwater Central Catholic High School and joined Illinois. During his freshman year in 2020, he took part in 8 games, playing 329 snaps, and ended the season with 15 tackles and 11 assists, alongside 13 stops. As a pass rusher, he had six total pressures, 5 QB hurries, no QB hits, and one sack.
The following year, Newton featured in 12 games and took part in 611 snaps. He recorded 27 tackles, 17 assists, and 19 stops, as well as 15 total pressures, 9 QB hurries, 3 QB hits, and three sacks.
In 2022, he participated in 12 games, contributing to 666 snaps, with 35 tackles, 15 assists, and 34 stops. As a pass rusher, he registered 54 total pressures, 32 QB hurries, 18 QB hits, and four sacks. His strengths are his power, initial quickness, violent hands, broad base, and low center of gravity, all used with impressive precision.
His motor is excellent, and his spin move is already of an NFL standard. His balance from high school wrestling days is especially noteworthy, as he rarely goes to the ground.
