NFL Draft Daily Dish: Tyler Warren’s historic performance highlights Week 7 standouts
By John Blair
Week seven of college football delivered several standout performances, but none more impressive than Penn State tight end Tyler Warren’s record-setting day in the Nittany Lions’ big win over USC. Another prospect who made waves was Southeast Missouri State quarterback Paxton DeLaurent, a small-school signal-caller to keep an eye on for the 2025 NFL Draft.
Tyler Warren's record-breaking performance
Penn State’s Tyler Warren was the star of week seven, tying the FBS tight end record with 17 receptions for 224 yards and a touchdown in Penn State’s win over USC. Not only did Warren put up eye-popping numbers, but he also demonstrated his versatility by lining up at tight end, wide receiver, running back, quarterback, and even center, showcasing his unique skill set in each role. This performance was no fluke either—Warren has already accumulated 40 receptions for 513 yards and four touchdowns this season.
As for his NFL potential, Warren possesses several traits that make him a compelling prospect. At 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds, he boasts remarkable athleticism for his size, adjusting well to off-target throws and displaying agility that sets him apart from other tight ends in the 2025 NFL Draft class. His reliable hands have led to just one drop this season, and his toughness after the catch allows him to break tackles consistently.
Warren is also an underrated blocker, who can play both on the line of scrimmage or outside as a slot receiver in the NFL. In this area, he uses his impressive size to set the edge in the run game, and while not asked to stay in much in the passing game as a blocker he has not given up a single sack during his Penn State career
NFL teams like the Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, both in need of a tight end, could be great fits for Warren. He could realistically hear his name called in the second round of the draft.
A small-school quarterback to watch: Paxton DeLaurent
Southeast Missouri State quarterback Paxton DeLaurent is another prospect turning heads. This past weekend, DeLaurent set the school’s career touchdown pass record, an impressive feat given he’s played just 23 games. Not only does he find the end zone often, but he’s also one of the highest-graded passers in college football, earning an 88.7 passing grade from Pro Football Focus.
DeLaurent’s NFL-caliber size, at 6-foot-5 and 229 pounds, is one of his standout traits. He moves well for his size, adept at extending plays in the pocket or picking up yards with his legs. His quick release is another asset, making him effective on quick-hitting routes.
However, DeLaurent’s game isn’t without concerns. He has a low release point, which can hurt his accuracy, causing his receivers to adjust to too many passes. There’s also a question mark regarding his arm strength and whether it’s sufficient for the NFL.
As far as his draft stock, much will depend on how DeLaurent performs in the pre-draft process, including potential invitations to showcase games like the Hula Bowl, where he can prove himself against NFL-level competition. While currently carrying an undrafted free agent grade, DeLaurent could impress enough to earn a shot in an NFL training camp.
