Will Mansoor Delane be able to show that the Kansas City Chiefs' trade of two-time All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie was a brilliant decision? If NFL Mocks’ bold prediction becomes reality in 2026, Chiefs fans will be ecstatic.
Regarded as the top cornerback prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft, the former LSU star was chosen by the Chiefs after they traded up from the 9th to the 6th overall pick. On draft night, Kansas City needed to make a deal with the Cleveland Browns to secure this player, a move that raises the question of whether they could have gotten him with their original No. 9 pick, which they had previously acquired in the McDuffie trade.
Why the Chiefs believed Mansoor Delane was worth the gamble
It's all hindsight at this point as what matters is that the Chiefs felt Delane was their guy as highlighted by defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.
"He jumped out on tape, there was no question about that, and it felt like – I think we all felt like he was the top corner in this class," Spagnuolo said of the Chiefs top draft pick.
Entering the draft, the Chiefs had a few needs and Delane satisfied their top need for an immediate starting cornerback with the potential to be very special in the league, especially if Spagnuolo uses him in a way that highlights his strengths, while not expecting him to immediately become the savior of the secondary.
At 6-foot, 190 pounds, Delane has the size, speed and coverage ability to emerge as an NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year contender. His press-man skills and relentless competitive nature give him the traits to make an immediate impact. It was that competitive nature that led him to transfer from Virgina Tech to LSU, where he felt there was a bigger challenge ahead.
"I kind of was real intrigued by his story. I think he could've came out after his last year there at Virginia Tech, or thought about it, but the information that we gathered was that he wanted to be challenged a little bit more so you go to LSU,” Spagnuolo said. “I think that speaks volumes about a guy and to have a really good year at LSU so hopeful that he's on that kind of track and he can be a good player for us.”

Bold prediction: Mansoor Delane finishes with five interceptions as a rookie
With L’Jarius Sneed holding down the other starting cornerback role, Delane does emerge and secures the second starting cornerback role. He won't face the burden of carrying the secondary from Day 1 with L'Jarius Sneed handling the other starting role. That freedom allows Delane to play aggressively, and he rewards the Chiefs quickly with his first NFL interception by Week 3 before emerging as one of the league's top rookie defenders by midseason. In all, NFL Mocks predicts Delane has a better rookie season statistically than McDuffie since the former Chiefs cornerback played just 11 games in 2022.
McDuffie finished his rookie season with 44 tackles, seven passes defended, one forced fumble and one sack, but he didn't record an interception. Surpassing that mark shouldn't be difficult for Delane. The bolder prediction is that he finishes with five interceptions. While he falls short of the franchise rookie record of eight, shared by Marcus Peters and Bobby Hunt, five interceptions would rank second in Chiefs history for a rookie.
Overall, Delane's rookie campaign won't completely erase memories of Trent McDuffie, but it will quickly validate why Kansas City was willing to make such a massive gamble. If he lives up to this prediction, the Chiefs won't spend much time looking back.
