The New York Giants have visions of Jaxson Dart as their quarterback of the future.  The only problem is, they may be seeing that future sooner than expected.

It’s a good problem to have for Brian Daboll and company and perhaps a bad problem for veteran quarterback Russell Wilson who must be looking over his shoulder watching the rookie dart footballs all over the field.

In another strong preseason outing, the No.25 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft impressed again going 14 of 16 for 137 yards with 1 passing touchdown and 1 rushing touchdown.  The highlight in his performance was this touchdown pass down the seam to tight end Greg Dulcich:

The rookie quarterback coming into his own

It’s just the preseason, but Dart has looked comfortable in the pocket.  He has also showcased his athleticism in moving around in the pocket and taking off when necessary.  Encouraged by his performance, Dart applauded his teammates for getting in positions where he could deliver.

“I thought guys were making great plays for me,” Dart said following the game, via NFL.com.  “I was just trying to distribute the ball to the playmakers.”

Not to be overshadowed by the rookie, Wilson turned back the clock and reminded NFL fans of his arm talent.  In the 31-12 victory over the New York Jets, the veteran QB delivered an 80-yard bomb to undrafted free agent wide receiver Beaux Collins.  He finished his stint as the starter of the game by completing 4-of-7 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown and interception.

Giants' offense looks good

While both quarterbacks did their part in exciting the fans at MetLife Stadium, the overall team performance is the encouraging part as the team has scored over 30 points in both preseason games so far.  They are building something in New York, but the goal for the coaching staff is to be patient.  No matter how Dart looks, bringing him on slowly and building off what he has done so far in training camp and preseason will set a strong growth foundation in ensuring he is ready when his number is called.

The good thing about Wilson being the veteran in this position is he was the rookie who overtook the veteran at the start of his career.  As a teacher and someone who has been there, his own experience can help Dart in his maturation.  It’s going to be hard, however, for the Giants not to have the temptation of going with Dart, especially if the offense is responding more to the rookie.

As of now, the overall play of the quarterbacks is helping the kid find his way in the NFL.

"The quarterback room has played at a very high level," Dart said. "A lot of the guys in my room who I really look up to, so I try to continue to pick their brains. I'm in a really unique and cool situation right now. So I'm just trying to learn from them, learn from all my coaches. Whenever my number is called, I think that I'm just going to try to do my best. But I'm also just going to be the best teammate that I can be and try to push this team in the best direction to win."

If it is not Dart to start the season, it looks like the Giants have set up a great situation for a young quarterback.  But, what is crystal clear, is he may be ready before anticipated.
