49ers rookie De'Zhaun Stribling could become San Francisco's X-factor

The San Francisco 49ers are already dealing with adversity at wide receiver after Ricky Pearsall was ruled out for the season following knee surgery. That leaves plenty of uncertainty at the position, especially with two veteran receivers carrying question marks into 2026. Deebo Samuel is looking to bounce back after the Washington Commanders moved on from him following just one season, while Mike Evans is coming off an injury-plagued campaign in which he caught a career-low 30 passes after a hamstring injury limited him to just eight games.

With those concerns, rookie second-round pick De'Zhaun Stribling could be thrust into a much larger role than anyone expected. The 49ers selected Stribling with the first pick of the second round, and he has already made a strong impression during training camp. He has quickly picked up the offense, earning praise from acting head coach Chris Foerster.

"He makes plays. He's fast. He's physical. He's got really, really good hands," Foerster said.

San Francisco is hoping Stribling can provide the same production he showed during his lone season at Ole Miss, where he caught 55 passes for 811 yards and six touchdowns. One of the biggest strengths he brings to the offense is his ability to create yards after the catch. Last season, more than 400 of his 811 receiving yards came after the catch, an average of more than seven yards after the reception. His combination of size and speed makes him especially difficult to bring down, measuring 6-foot-2 and 207 pounds while running a 4.37-second 40-yard dash. Stribling also displayed dependable hands, dropping just one pass all season while consistently tracking the deep ball.

As for his role in 2026, expect Stribling to begin the season as Mike Evans' primary backup. However, if Evans is slowed by injuries again, Stribling could earn significant playing time. The biggest area of his game that still needs refinement is his route running, but if he develops in that area and proves to be a reliable target, he'll have an excellent opportunity to compete with Ricky Pearsall for a starting role in 2027, especially if the 49ers decide not to re-sign Samuel after the season.
