A sixth-year college quarterback isn't usually at the top of NFL Draft boards, and that won't be any different for Kansas signal caller Jalon Daniels. However, the 22-year-old (turns 23 in October) looks the part of an NFL quarterback after his near-flawless week zero performance, where he led the Jayhawks to a 31-7 victory over Fresno State.
It doesn't get much more efficient than Daniels' final stat line – 18-of-20 passing for 176 yards and three touchdowns with 47 yards rushing on eight carries.
Dual-threat efficiency
Daniels showcased his entire arsenal early and often, completing passes with precision and using his legs to work the pocket and deliver passes on the run. And, when the situation calls for it, he has a running back-like ability to make big gains on the ground.

The Daniels-led Kansas offense hit the ground running with back-to-back touchdown drives to start the game before Fresno State finally proved he was human on the third drive. Daniels appeared shaken up on a sack on third and long, but he returned immediately and showed no ill effects the rest of the way.
He continued to show absolute command and precision, leading Kansas to a 24-7 lead at halftime. Mixing in a heavy dose of the run game, Daniels capped off KU's first drive of the third quarter with a TD pass to effectively end the game, putting the Jayhawks ahead by the final margin of 31-7.

If there's one knock on Daniels, it is his durability. The quarterback run game for Kansas makes it tough for Daniels to avoid hits sometimes, so that will be something to look out for as the season develops. He has been very effective when healthy in his first five years at Kansas, throwing for 6,751 yards and 45 touchdowns to just 24 interceptions. On the ground, he has rushed for 1,047 yards and 19 touchdowns.
If he can put together a complete, healthy 2025 campaign, Daniels could generate Heisman Trophy buzz and, in turn, raise his stock for the 2026 NFL Draft.
