Charlie Becker has the tools to be a top 2027 NFL Draft prospect, but just how high can the Indiana star climb?

Charlie Becker is a junior wide receiver out of Indiana. The 6'4, 208-pound Becker is from Nashville, Tennessee, and was a three-star recruit out of Father Ryan High School.

Becker is having a breakout season for Indiana with 27 receptions for 477 yards and eight touchdowns. That's already double his touchdowns and more than three-fourths of his yards from all of last season.

Becker is an excellent deep threat with his size and speed. His profile and production are putting him squarely in the "WR2" discussion for the 2027 NFL Draft. But does that mean he is a true first-round talent?

Right now, Becker profiles as a high-level No. 2 receiver rather than a true No. 1 option. The draft value of that type of player will vary from team to team. The holes in Becker’s game will likely keep him out of the top 10, but the right team could covet what he brings to an offense and still make him a first-round pick.

What are Charlie Becker's biggest strengths?

  • Becker uses his speed and long strides to get downfield in a hurry on deep routes.
  • Strong hands allow Becker to make a lot of catches, especially contested ones down the field.
  • Very good at adjusting to the ball, which is why he succeeds on deep balls and back shoulder throws
  • Becker is a QB-friendly receiver in the scramble drill. He always has eyes on the quarterback and finds open space where the QB can find him and make a throw. Then that toughness and catching ability come into play if the pass comes in traffic.
  • High-IQ player on those scramble drills, but also awareness of where the sideline and first-down markers are.
  • Very willing to mix it up as a blocker. Indiana even puts him just off the line of scrimmage or in the backfield to be an extra man in the run game.

Where can Charlie Becker improve?

  • Becker has not shown to be a diverse route runner. He's mostly running go, stop, and out routes
  • Becker's routes aren't very crisp. He does not set them up or make breaks quickly. Out routes tend to loop at the top, and stop routes take a few steps to break down.
  • Despite his size and willingness to block, he'll need to get stronger to be effective at it in the NFL. College corners get off most of the blocks pretty easily.

NFL Draft Projection

Charlie Becker is going to be a first-round pick. The size and speed, matched with the hands and IQ, are a coach's dream.

But there are serious questions about how big a role he can have at the NFL level, and if teams don't think he can become a true "WR1", then that will limit how high he can go in the draft.

If a team with a true number-one wide receiver wants to add to the room with a top-15 pick, that would be appropriate. But to be a top-10 pick, teams usually want true "WR1" potential.

NFL Pro Comparison

My comp for Becker right now is Green Bay Packers wide receiver Christian Watson, with maybe slightly more reliable hands (as a prospect) with just a touch less explosiveness.

Watson coming out of North Dakota State was that same size/speed threat on the outside, with questions about his productivity. Was he just a big and fast receiver at the FCS level? Or could he become a more nuanced player in the NFL, where the competition could match his physical traits?

What I like about this comp is that Watson didn't become a different player in the NFL, but he is still finding a lot of success. Green Bay has had successful offenses with him as their top receiver, even if he's not a typical "WR1". Becker may not reach the same heights as Watson, but he will be effective in his role. And Watson shows the high-end version of what Becker can be.

Final Evaluation

Overall Grade: 88/100

Draft Projection: Top 20 pick

I don't have Becker as a first-round talent, but I do think he'll end up being a first-round pick. The areas of improvement as a route runner have me questioning his ceiling, but I think he'll be a really good number two in an offense.

The downfield explosiveness, strong hands, and IQ Becker displays would make him a great option for a playoff-caliber team in the first round. Ultimately, I think that's when Becker will hear his name called.
