Is Dallas Cowboys rookie Caleb Downs the answer at franchise safety the team has been searching for? If what he showed at Ohio State and throughout training camp is any indication, Dallas may have landed much more than that.
The former Ohio State star was projected as a top-five pick but slid to the Cowboys at No. 11 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft. That slight draft-night fall could turn into one of the biggest steals of the first round, especially if Downs makes the type of immediate impact he is capable of making.
Did Downs slide into the perfect situation? With the Cowboys looking for a new defensive identity a year after trading Micah Parsons, the rookie safety has an opportunity to become the playmaker who takes command of the defensive backfield. And if this bold prediction hits, Downs won't just make an impact in Dallas. He'll put the entire NFL on notice.
Downs recognized his fit in the Cowboys' defense almost immediately after he was drafted.
"I think it's just being able to make plays in all facets of the game," Downs said of how he fits in the Cowboys' defense. "Whether that's near the line of scrimmage or in the deep part of the field, I feel like I could do it all and it'll be a great relationship to be able to do that with the Cowboys."

As a deep free safety, Downs enters the NFL with the versatility to be a playmaker all over the field. At 6-foot-0, 210 pounds, he comes with high-level playmaking ability that only amplifies his high football IQ and communication skills. As he showed at Ohio State as a high-impact defender, Downs has impressed and turned heads during training camp with his ability to cover a wide receiver the caliber of CeeDee Lamb.
That versatility will be key for new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, who has the chess piece he needs on the back end of the defense to stymie opposing offenses with multiple fronts and an array of defensive schemes due to Downs' instincts and ability to be where he needs to be on the field.
"Premium instincts," Parker said of Downs via the team's official website. "You can tell his football intellect, the way he directs traffic out there, the way he reads and reacts, his brain is connected with his feet. It was constant. You're watching three years of film, and there's not a difference in the tape.
"He's constantly making the right decision, constantly down in the football, constantly making contact with it, constantly just in the right spot. It's just a smooth, smooth transition and smooth play."

Parker also labeled Downs a "natural football player," which leads to a bold prediction that, if it plays out, will have the Cowboys rookie right in the mix for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Along with his coverage skills, Downs' ability to play in the box and around the line of scrimmage will lead to over 110 combined tackles. But it won't just be the tackling that puts Downs in the mix for DROY. It will be what he does in coverage that sets him apart from past rookie sensations like Jalen Pitre, T.J. Ward and Derwin James Jr.
With the way he showed he can lock up an All-Pro receiver like Lamb, his versatility as a deep coverage safety who can also convert to a slot defender will lead to five interceptions, with one of those being a pick-six.
In a division that will feature Ohio State defensive stars taken in the top 10, including Sonny Styles with the Washington Commanders and Arvell Reese with the New York Giants, Downs will prove to be the most impactful of the three in Year 1 due to the multiple ways he can impact the game.
