Can Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Skyler Bell become another explosive weapon for Josh Allen? Set to make his NFL debut in Week 5, the former UConn star has a chance to do more than make an impression under the bright lights of Monday Night Football. He has an opportunity to earn a bigger role in Buffalo's offense.

With starting wide receiver Joshua Palmer ruled out due to a shoulder injury and DJ Moore questionable, the Bills will be looking for another playmaker to complement Moore, Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman as they seek a road victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Bell, who was selected with the No. 125 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, could give Buffalo head coach Joe Brady and the Bills' offense a boost if he can make plays down the field and turn limited opportunities into big gains.

What Skyler Bell brings to the Buffalo Bills offense

The Bills traded for Moore to be a receiver who could stretch the field as a deep threat for Allen, but Bell brings a similar skill set to the offense.

Obviously, the rookie wide receiver doesn't have the experience or NFL resume of Moore, but at UConn he was an absolute weapon.

Although Bell has a slender frame, he is an explosive wide receiver who is lethal with the ball in his hands, ranking second in the FBS in 2025 with 835 yards after the catch. Like Shakir, he can turn short targets into big gains from the slot position, but he also can stretch the field in a role similar to Palmer's.

With Coleman showing signs of becoming a bigger factor in Buffalo's passing attack, the Bills' offense will get a major lift if Bell is able to step up and provide Allen with another playmaker who can create explosive plays.

Why Monday Night Football could change Bell's rookie season

While Bell didn't get many opportunities to shine on the big stage while at UConn, making an impact on Monday Night Football and developing a connection with a quarterback of Allen's caliber could give him confidence, earn him more snaps and potentially establish him as another explosive option in Buffalo's offense.

For Brady, Bell's opportunity isn't coming without preparation. The rookie has already been getting valuable practice reps with Allen, which could make his transition into the offense much smoother.

"It was good because early in the week, he's taking DJ Moore's (dealing with a shoulder injury) plays in practice," Brady said via the team's official website. "…It's not like he hasn't been getting work with Josh (Allen)…He's made the most of these opportunities and now just knowing…these are going to be your plays now with Josh Palmer down. I got all the confidence in Skyler. I'm excited for his opportunity."

That confidence will go a long way in how explosive Bell can be. He isn't simply stepping onto the field because of injuries. He's getting an opportunity to show that the work he's put in with Allen can translate into production when the games count.

But ultimately, it's an opportunity for Bell to show why he was one of the top wide receivers in the nation during his final season at UConn. It was his ability to separate, sure hands, yards-after-catch production and reliability within the offense that made him a Biletnikoff Award finalist.

Can he make a play or two against a solid Rams secondary and show the Bills that his college production can translate to the NFL?

With Palmer's injury opening the door, Bell now has an opportunity to make his own case for a bigger role in Buffalo's offense. The question is whether Brady and Allen will find ways to utilize his skill set and take advantage of the explosiveness he brings to the field.

The Rams' defense will play a role in that answer, as will Bell himself, who is embracing his opportunity.

“We are ready to go,” Bell said. “I'm excited.”

The excitement is felt, but what Bell does once the ball is snapped could have Bills Mafia pumped up for what the rookie can bring to the table.
