6 teams moving closer to a quarterback decision

- Houston Texans
- Indianapolis Colts
- Minnesota Vikings
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Philadelphia Eagles
- New York Giants
All six of these teams were in my "probably won't need a quarterback, but they could" group last month. And for a variety of reasons, they should now at least consider drafting a quarterback in 2027.
The Houston Texans are sitting at the top of the draft order after four weeks, one of the biggest surprises of the young season.
Could the Texans move on from C.J. Stroud?
Houston is only committed to starting quarterback C.J. Stroud through the 2027 season. And while he is playing well in 2026, finances could play a role in their decision for the 2027 NFL Draft.
The team did not feel strongly enough about Stroud to sign him to an extension this offseason, so if there's a chance to restart the rookie contract quarterback timeline with an early draft pick, that at least has to be under consideration.
Indianapolis and Minnesota were entering 2026 with big questions at quarterback, and neither Daniel Jones nor Kyler Murray is playing particularly well. The two quarterbacks are ranked 27th and 24th in EPA/dropback, respectively.
The Colts obviously don't have a first-round pick in 2027, but with several names potentially available in the second round, they could take one then to sit behind Jones for part of 2027.
Why the Buccaneers, Eagles and Giants could enter the QB market
The Bucs and Eagles might both be more 2028 teams when it comes to quarterback, but both franchises seem to be at a turning point after four weeks of 2026.
Tampa Bay gave Baker Mayfield the big extension this offseason, but after erratic play, another injury, and an 0-4 start before their Week 5 victory over Dallas, they could look to go in a new direction with a top pick in the draft.
Philadelphia is making the rare move into a new era in the middle of the season that could lead them to some drastic moves in the 2027 NFL Draft. And with their history of investing at quarterback earlier than expected, I'm sure they are paying close attention to this class.
And finally, in New York, Jaxson Dart was ruled out for the season after their second game. With this new coaching staff not being the group that drafted Dart, and a season-ending injury after his rookie year was dominated by trips to the blue tent, New York could opt to go in a new direction in 2027. Especially with the rest of the roster seeming to be in good shape after a 3-1 start.
These teams won't all go quarterback in the draft, but after four weeks, it's at least on the table for each of them.
And while those six teams are moving closer to the quarterback market, two others are beginning to move in the opposite direction.
