Three weeks into the 2026 NFL season, there are already some surprising teams sitting near the top of the 2027 NFL Draft order. If they stay there, could we see a team make a major decision at quarterback, or could a player like Jeremiah Smith become the favorite to go No. 1 overall next April?
Two of the five teams currently winless made the playoffs a season ago. Could the Houston Texans or Los Angeles Chargers climb out of the cellar, or could either team face major decisions if the season continues to slide?
Then there are the New York Jets, who currently hold three of the first 11 picks. If those selections remain near the top of the first round, the Jets could become the team holding most of the cards in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Texans at No. 1 could change the 2027 NFL Draft
The Texans currently sit at No. 1 after an 0-3 start, followed by the Buccaneers, Titans, Chargers and Dolphins.
Of those five teams, the Dolphins and Titans aren't necessarily surprises. The team that could change the direction of the draft is the one currently holding the No. 1 overall pick: Houston.
The Texans have a recent history of starting slowly before finding a way back into playoff contention. With the defense Houston has, another turnaround is possible. But if things don't improve, the Texans could face one of the most fascinating decisions in the 2027 NFL Draft.
Do they stick with C.J. Stroud, or select one of the top quarterback prospects such as Arch Manning, Darian Mensah or Dante Moore, three of the top five quarterbacks in our NFL Draft QB power rankings?
Or do they use the No. 1 pick on Jeremiah Smith?
The Buccaneers could face a similar decision if they remain near the top. With Baker Mayfield sidelined due to injury and the team leaning on undrafted rookie Jalon Daniels at quarterback, there's a chance things get even more bleak in Tampa.
Could the Buccaneers suddenly enter the race for one of the top quarterbacks in the 2027 NFL Draft?
Jets could control the first round with three picks
Then there are the Jets.
New York owns its own first-round pick, Indianapolis' first-rounder and the more favorable of the Cowboys' and Packers' first-round selections. That gives the Jets a chance to control the top of the 2027 NFL Draft.
The Jets can still be competitive this season and potentially enter draft weekend with three premium selections. That would give New York tremendous flexibility to target multiple needs, move around the board or potentially make a run at one of the elite prospects at the top of the class.
Who they select, and what they do with all that draft capital, could become one of the biggest stories of the 2027 NFL Draft.
