These 6 teams probably won't need a quarterback, but they could

This group has a mix of teams with veteran and young quarterbacks that should feel fairly confident they have their franchise quarterback, but there are scenarios in 2026 that I could see leading them to go in a different direction.

  • Indianapolis Colts
  • Houston Texans
  • Philadelphia Eagles
  • New York Giants
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Minnesota Vikings

The Indianapolis Colts gave Daniel Jones essentially a one-year extension this offseason. However, if things go sideways in 2026 as Jones recovers from his Achilles injury, they can get out of the deal pretty easily. But without a first-round pick in 2027, the best they could do is take one in the second round.

The Houston Texans have a good quarterback on their roster in CJ Stroud. But despite picking up Stroud's fifth-year option for 2027, they have not given him a long-term extension. So we can't completely rule out the possibility that, if this year goes poorly, they could look into quarterbacks next April.

The Philadelphia Eagles have a Super Bowl MVP at quarterback, but the team is going to be under intense scrutiny this season. With a lot of questions and the offense moving in a new direction, Jalen Hurts will be under a microscope. But if there's a major change after 2026, it's more likely to be at head coach than quarterback.

The New York Giants moved back into the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft for Jaxson Dart, but that was under Brian Daboll. If things go poorly in 2026, new head coach John Harbaugh might rip the band-aid off and pick his own quarterback in the 2027 draft.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Minnesota Vikings have veteran quarterbacks who are not under contract for 2027, so they have to be considered. But I believe both teams will have good seasons, get good play from their quarterbacks, and look to build around them, instead of without them, next offseason.
