No. 16: New York Jets via Indianapolis Colts – Ty Simpson, QB, Alabama

There’s a chance the Jets can sit back and see if Ty Simpson slides into Day 2, but if they desire him as their option at QB, they take him here with teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals also hungry for QB talent.  With four picks in the top 50, the Jets can afford to take a player like Simpson a little higher than projected.  A leap that could result in a high reward given his potential under center.

No. 17: Detroit Lions – Monroe Freeling, T, Georgia

With tackle as a big need, the Lions take Monroe Freeling with the No. 17 overall pick in the draft.  After the release of Tayler Decker, the Lions need to fill this need and do so with Freeling who is a pass protection specialist.

No. 18: Philadelphia Eagles, via Minnesota – Akheem Mesidor, ED, Miami (FL)

The Eagles leap up past both the Carolina Panthers and Dallas Cowboys to select Akheem Mesidor with the No. 18 overall pick in the draft.  This is a sweet spot for Mesidor who is one of the more tenacious edge rushers in the draft.  He is an older rookie but has the size and skillset to instantly be an impact player for the Eagles coming off the edge.  After losing Jaelan Phillips in the offseason, the Eagles make edge rush a priority in the draft and they trade up for a good one!

No. 19: Carolina Panthers – Dillon Thieneman, S, Oregon

The Panthers take care of their need in the defensive secondary with the selection of former Oregon star Dillon Thieneman.  Although Panthers fans had another former Oregon star high on the wish list (Sadiq), Thieneman helps solidify the backend of the defense and is a player who brings leadership, versatility and playmaking to the defensive unit.

No. 20: Dallas Cowboys, via Green Bay – Jermod McCoy, CB, Tennessee

The Cowboys don’t let Jermod McCoy slide too far.  With concerns over his knee, the upside of McCoy gives the Cowboys a potential long-term, high impact cornerback to pair with DaRon Bland.  After moving up to get Styles with the top pick, the Cowboys get a bit lucky as McCoy slides a bit in the first round.
