Expectations were high for Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty going into the season, as he was named NFL Mock’s "stand-on-the-table" running back prospect. However, he has far exceeded those expectations, emerging as one of the top two players in college football alongside Colorado’s Travis Hunter. So far, Jeanty has rushed for 1,525 yards and 20 touchdowns, and he made Boise State history by becoming the first running back to rush for over 100 yards in eight consecutive games.

Some of Jeanty's standout performances this season include a 192-yard, three-touchdown game against top-ranked Oregon's defense. He’s also posted three games with over 200 rushing yards, including a 259-yard game against Washington State and a remarkable 267-yard showing against Georgia Southern. Jeanty has maximized his carries, averaging more than 10 yards per rush in three games, highlighted by a 14.2-yard average against Utah State.

Jeanty scouting report

What sets Jeanty apart as a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft is his powerful lower body and resilience through contact. He leads the nation with 83 missed tackles forced, an impressive 24 more than the next player, according to Pro Football Focus. Alongside his strength, he demonstrates excellent vision, often finding open lanes with ease.

Jeanty is also a skilled receiver out of the backfield. Last season, he led all FBS running backs with 569 receiving yards on 43 receptions, earning a nation-leading 91.6 receiving grade from PFF. However, he’ll need to improve his pass-blocking skills to be considered a true every-down back in the NFL. His 5-foot-9 frame can make him vulnerable to powerful defenders, and refining his hand technique will be crucial for his transition.

Another potential concern is his lack of elite breakaway speed. While he shows excellent burst and acceleration, he doesn’t have the same home-run threat as some backs, like De’Von Achane. Nonetheless, he’s still effective at creating big plays, with 32 runs over 10 yards this season.

In terms of NFL fit, the Denver Broncos seem like an ideal destination. Their current lead back, Javonte Williams, is set to become a free agent, and he’s averaging just 3.8 yards per carry this season. Adding Jeanty could give coach Sean Payton a versatile weapon reminiscent of Alvin Kamara, who thrived in New Orleans under Payton’s guidance.
