Quentin Johnston goes into the 2023 NFL Draft as the top wide receiver on many draft boards. Can Johnston keep his top spot after the combine and find a way to vault his way into the top ten?

Name: Quentin Johnston

Position: WR

School: TCU

Height: 6-foot-4*

Weight: 215 pounds*

Background

Going into the 2023 NFL Draft, Quinton Johnston is a hot prospect with a chance to end up in the top ten. The wide receiver had 60 catches for 1,069 yards this season. He also found the end zone six times in 2022. The junior wideout is 6-foot-4 and looks like a prototypical wide receiver at 215 pounds. When you watch him, you can clearly see that this guy has a future in the NFL as a wide receiver with his size.

Strengths:

-Very Athletic

-Size

-Ability After the Catch

When watching film, Quentin Johnston seems to be a perfect fit on the boundary in the NFL. Johnston looks very athletic and has great size. He has the potential to be a great jump-ball receiver downfield. In general, he plays like an NFL wide receiver already.

He will struggle with press coverage coming into the league  (as noted by many different NFL Draft experts) but he has the intangibles to create separation in the NFL. I really like his ability to turn up the field after the catch; watch for him to become a YAC merchant.

Weaknesses:

-Limited Route Tree

-Run-Blocking

-Drops

There is a lot of NFL talent in this wide receiver. Still, a lot of NFL Draft experts say that he has a limited route tree and I tend to agree with that. I am really interested in what teams will think of him as individual team workouts take place. Some teams will likely have Johnston way lower on their draft boards. Scouts will view his poor run-blocking as another issue that he has to work through. Addtionally, Johnston has a very high drop rate of 8.5 percent.

2023 Draft Projection: Top 10-15 (1st Round)

With the amount of talent on the defensive side — plus the quarterbacks — I highly doubt that Johnston ends up going within the top ten in this draft. Still, the TCU standout will not be waiting long after that (if at all). I could see him going to the Patriots if he falls a bit. I really like that fit for both sides.

The 2023 NFL Draft is still a very long way away but I see Johnston’s worst-case scenario being No. 15 overall (which is the Packers’ pick). If he is available at that spot, the Packers should take him. In the interest of not repeating other people’s work, I will say a lot of analysts have him going to the Titans at the No. 11 overall pick.

Going to the Titans is a strong possibility. I wouldn’t be completely shocked if someone traded up with the Eagles (who own the Saints’ pick at No. 10) to get Johnston before the Titans snatch him up. If I had to make a prediction (based on the time of the writing), I would say that the former TCU player is the first wide receiver taken in the 2023 NFL Draft.
