Round 5, 140th Overall: Julius Brents, CB, Kansas State

Enjoy this pick now, Los Angeles Rams fans. Julius Brents might be one of the better kept secrets in the 2023 NFL Draft at this moment. We know the Rams need help in the secondary. Jalen Ramsey has struggled a bit more than expected in 2022, and the room still needs an influx of talent.

Brents is a big corner (6’3″, 203 pounds) with long arms who plays a physical brand of ball as a press man corner. He’s such a route disruptor throughout route stems, and can squeeze wide receivers to the sideline on vertical routes. Brents is a playmaker too, and he forced two turnovers in the Big 12 championship game.

Round 5, 169th Overall: Eric Gray, RB, Oklahoma

The Rams waiving Darrell Henderson was a bit of a shock, followed by the fact that they aren’t giving Kyren Williams any run at the end of the season. Cam Akers is still carrying the load, but it’s clear that he hasn’t been the same since his achilles injury. The Rams need to take advantage of this deep running back class, and Eric Gray would be a real nice fit in Los Angeles. Gray is a smooth runner between the tackles with great vision and decisiveness. He has effective, violent cuts that can make defenders miss in space and get into gaps that open late.

Round 5, 173rd Overall: Charlie Jones, WR, Purdue

With Allen Robinson and Cooper Kupp out, this has been a good chance for the Rams to get a look at Tutu Atwell and Brandon Powell. They’ve got Jacob Harris waiting in the wings, so with all that speed, getting another strong possession receiver makes sense. Charlie Jones has had a fantastic 2022 campaign for Purdue after transferring in from Iowa, catching 110 passes for 1,361 yards and 12 touchdowns. Despite being just 6’0″ and 188 pounds, Jones wins a ton at the catch point down the field, and has the back shoulder wins down. He could play an early role on the perimeter and in the slot.
