Green Bay Packers: Christian Watson Breakout Is Huge For The Offense
Christian Watson had his breakout game for the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, and he might be what helps change their season.
The Green Bay Packers aren’t done just yet. Defeating the Dallas Cowboys at him 31-28 in overtime should give them a little momentum moving forward in what should be a tight wild card race in the NFC. While the offense leaned heavily on the run game, Aaron Rodgers found Christian Watson in big moments, even after a couple of early drops. Watson found that confidence and delivered, catching four passes for 107 yards, scoring three times.
His first touchdown catch on 3rd and 1 was a nice late adjustment on a go ball after stacking the corner, and he followed it up with a backflip in the end zone. His second score was on 4th and 7, and a subtle re-stem vertically got the corner in defensive mode, and it’s tough to catch him with that speed. The same thing happened on the third touchdown, where Watson just stuck his foot in the ground and outran everyone on a crosser.
Watson’s speed was always the defining trait for him as a prospect. It’s field-tilting and jarring for opposing defenses to handle. The hand technique still needs improvement, but this was a major stepping stone for him.
After dropping a potential touchdown in the opener, and missing games due to injury, it had to feel cathartic for Watson to put all of that behind him. Now, he might be one of the keys to get the Green Bay Packers back on track this season. Running the ball will obviously be important, but the Packers struggled on obvious passing downs because teams could feel comfortable manning up. Watson could make man coverage more difficult, which could open things up more in the passing game.
Will Christian Watson have another three-touchdown game this season? Maybe. But, what matters is he’s a threat to score on any play, which gives the Packers much-needed juice.
