5. Pittsburgh Steelers – Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State

The Pittsburgh Steelers need help on the offensive line but with Skoronski already taken, let’s get Minkah Fitzpatrick some help in the secondary with their pick in this mock draft. Penn State’s Joey Porter Jr. has the makings of a shutdown cornerback in the NFL. He’s long, athletic, and welcomes the challenge when left on an island in coverage. His father played for the franchise from 1999-2006, and now JPJ will follow in his footsteps.

6. New England Patriots – Kelee Ringo, CB, Georgia

The Patriots may have found a late-round gem in Jack Jones, but the defense still needs more talent at the position. Georgia’s Kelee Ringo is physical both in coverage and as an oncoming tackler. He is a leader for Kirby Smart’s star-studded unit, and the fact he’s extremely coachable will earn him favor with head coach Bill Belichick.

7. Washington Commanders – Paris Johnson Jr., OL, Ohio State

The Washington Commanders have a slew of fun offensive weapons on their roster, but it’s hard to make the most of those if the offensive line isn’t improved. Paris Johnson Jr. is still early in his development, but with experience at guard and tackle, he can find snaps anywhere on the line as a rookie. He’s done well protecting CJ Stroud’s blindside in 2022 and will be able to do the same for whoever the Commanders trot out at QB in 2023.

8. Detroit Lions – Bryce Young, QB, Alabama

The Detroit Lions have slow played this rebuild under general manager Brad Holmes, but the perfect opportunity arises in this mock draft for the franchise as 2021 Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young falls in their lap at No. 8. What Young lacks in prototypical size, he makes up for in natural talent and rare poise for a player of his age.

The Lions are among the highest-scoring offenses in the league so far in 2022, and they haven’t even gotten any contributions from Young’s former teammate, wide receiver Jameson Williams. When the two reunite in the Motor City in 2023, all the pieces will be in place for a playoff run.
