2023 NFL Draft: Can BYU QB Jaren Hall Make Push For QB3?
He’s off to a strong start in 2022, but can BYU quarterback Jaren Hall make a push for the 2023 NFL Draft QB3?
While there are several weeks to go in the 2022 college football season, things are starting to take shape for the 2023 NFL Draft. The quarterback position is one of those, as the “big two” of C.J. Stroud and Bryce Young will be the headliners of the group throughout the process and the draft itself.
The biggest question at the position is who is that third guy? Kentucky’s Will Levis might be the de facto guy right now, as his season has been solid to this point, but SEC play is going to show what he’s about. Hendon Hooker is playing well at Tennessee. But, there’s another right up there with them, and that’s BYU’s Jaren Hall.
Hall is in his second year as the starter for BYU, taking over in the 2021 season after Zach Wilson left for the NFL. He completed nearly 64 percent of his passes last fall, throwing for 20 touchdowns to just five interceptions. While Hall definitely played things close to the vest last season, throwing with good timing, anticipation, and accuracy to the short and intermediate areas of the field, he still took some chances on vertical shot plays.
The 2022 season feels like one where Hall has shown a bit more confidence, whether it be with how he sees the field and what windows he’s willing to challenge. His anticipatory throws have become more commonplace, and the touch he throws with to the intermediate and deep areas is impressive, not to mention said accuracy on those throws. His 12 touchdowns to just one interception so far this year is (of course) worth noting as well, especially considering he has played against both Oregon and Baylor to date.
So is Jaren Hall QB3 right now in the 2023 NFL Draft? Probably not. Hooker and Levis still hold a slight edge over him. But, the stock is trending up for Hall, who has two resume games coming up against Notre Dame and Arkansas in back-to-back weeks. Those will be important ones to convince scouts, teams, and analysts that he’s the real deal in this quarterback class.
