New York Giants Will Get Great Daniel Jones Evaluation In 2022
With Brian Daboll in the fold, a better offensive line, and healthy playmakers, the New York Giants should get their best evaluation of Daniel Jones in 2022.
The 2022 NFL season is gong to be a fascinating one for the New York Giants. With Joe Schoen in as general manager, and Brian Daboll in as the new head coach, the culture should see a shift this coming summer and fall. That shift felt fierce in the 2022 NFL Draft, when the Giants got both Kayvon Thibodeaux and Evan Neal to be cornerstones on either side of the ball.
The offensive line should be better in 2022 with Neal and Andrew Thomas manning the bookends. If Kadarius Toney can break out, and Saquon Barkley can stay healthy, the offense will feature a ton of playmakers. The real fascinating position is at quarterback, as Daniel Jones will be under heavy evaluation in 2022.
Can Daniel Jones break out with the New York Giants?
It’s an interesting question, one that we (of course) are asking during leap week. Jones will have his third different offensive coordinator in four seasons, and really hasn’t been dealt the best hand in his time in the league.
Jones entered the league as a strong decision maker with rigid mechanics and some impressive flashes of accuracy to all levels of the field. He lacked the high level arm, but had enough athleticism to improve upon his game when things would break down.
You can bet that the Giants will throw everything they can at him this fall in hopes to figure out what their next steps will be in 2023 at the quarterback position, and that comes from what Daboll liked to deploy in Buffalo.
Something to immediately note here is the QB run game. While the Bills didn’t deploy it often with Josh Allen, they knew it was integral to success in key games throughout the regular season and in the postseason. When you have a tough, athletic quarterback, it’s going to find its way into the scheme. As we’ve seen, Jones can make things happen as a runner, so don’t be surprised if he has a career year on the ground and can take advantage of defenses that will be keying on a healthy Barkley.
As far as the passing game goes, the New York Giants have a good bucket of receiving types in house. It’ll give Daboll flexibility to jump into empty when he’d like to, and he will give Jones some good opportunities with play action and mesh variations. Now, Daboll has mentioned things won’t look the same as they did in Buffalo, and with the YAC monsters of Toney and Wan’Dale Robinson, more quick-hitting stuff (screens, smoke routes) could be in the cards as well. Daboll will still have the ability to get vertical as well and stretch the defense horizontally.
Jones hasn’t showed much since his rookie campaign, coming back to earth with relatively poor campaigns. However, with a coach/coordinator that could make things easy for him, it’s possible we get shades of Jones as a rookie, especially with the cupboard fully loaded.
Will there be a breakout? Maybe! But, even if not, the Giants will get the eval they need to plan for the future at the position. Whatever happens, Daniel Jones will be one of the most interesting players to watch in what could be his final season with the New York Giants.
