2022 NFL Draft: Which Rookie Quarterback Will See the Field First?

Nine quarterbacks heard their name called in the 2022 NFL Draft. I’m going to include one undrafted free agent to make it an even ten. Of these young hurlers, which one will see the field first?

*Players will be listed in descending order from where they were drafted. Each quarterback will be assigned a percentage out of 100, this determines their likelihood to see the field in 2022.*

10. Carson Strong (Philadelphia Eagles)

The Philadelphia Eagles awarded Carson Strong one of the biggest signing bonuses in NFL history for an undrafted free agent. Following a sparkling TD:INT ratio of 63:12 in his junior and senior seasons, Strong was expected to be drafted in the first half of the 2022 NFL Draft. Due to multiple past knee injuries, Strong’s medicals scared off many. Gardner Minshew is slated to be the teams primary backup, so Strong is likely destined for practice squad duty as a rookie.

9. Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers)

The San Francisco 49ers took Brock Purdy at pick 262 in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Purdy started 48 games at Iowa State, helping lead the Cyclones to bowl-eligibility each of his four seasons on campus. He is not a guy that will ‘wow’ you with traits, but is very dependable. He is the perfect type of personality to be a long-term backup quarterback in the league. Currently, Nate Sudfeld is slated to be the primary backup to Trey Lance (assuming a Jimmy Garoppolo trade). Purdy can immediately challenge for that backup spot. This puts him in a unique position, because one injury to Trey Lance is all it would take to see action.

8. Skylar Thompson (Miami Dolphins)

The Miami Dolphins selected Skylar Thompson at pick 247 of the seventh round. Thompson is a true dual-threat option at the quarterback position. He never showed that he could win games with his arm, which severely limited his evaluation heading into the draft. The Dolphins are all-in on Tua Tagovailoa and have career journeyman Teddy Bridgewater entrenched as the backup. This gives Thompson quite the uphill battle to seeing the field in 2022.

7. Chris Oladokun (Pittsburgh Steelers)

Speaking of journeymen, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Chris Oladokun out of South Dakota State in the seventh round (No. 241 overall) of the 2022 NFL Draft. Oladokun bounced around from South Florida, to FCS school Sam Houston State, and eventually South Dakota State. He threw for 3000+ yards, 25 passing touchdowns, and recorded multiple rushing and receiving touchdowns in his lone season with the Bearkats. It is easy to see a path to playing time as a gadget player, but with Mitchell Trubisky and Kenny Pickett ahead of him, it’s unlikely that Oladokun sees snaps as a starting quarterback in 2022.
