Taking a look back at the hits and misses from the 2019 NFL Draft at the quarterback position.

The old saying is that it takes three years to truly evaluate a draft pick so that means we should have a pretty good read on the 2019 NFL Draft class. Overall we saw 11 quarterbacks taken in this draft with the first one off the board being Kyler Murray who went to the Arizona Cardinals with the number one overall pick. When looking at this class as a whole it really only produced one possible franchise-level quarterback in Kyler Murray, one quarterback who is fighting to keep a starting job in Drew Lock, and one backup in Gardner Minshew. The class also produced several players who failed to live up to expectations.

NFL Draft Hits

Kyler Murray

There is no doubt that the Arizona Cardinals made the correct decision to move on from Josh Rosen in favor of Kyler Murray. This was a risky move at the time as the Cardinals took Rosen with the 10th pick of the previous NFL Draft. However, Murray has gone on to become a contender for the MVP award while Rosen has had trouble sticking on an NFL roster having spent time with five different teams.

Gardner Minshew

Any time you can get a top 40 quarterback in the sixth round of the draft you have to consider it a great selection. While Minshew has yet to establish himself as a starter he has proven he is a valuable backup who you can count on to fill in for an injured starter.

Drew Lock

While it might be a stretch to call Drew Lock a draft hit he was probably the third-best selection from a weak quarterback class. He started for one season in Denver and was part of the trade that brought Russell Wilson to town. If he can win the starting job in Seattle he could end up being a good selection otherwise he will just be one of the many quarterbacks from this group who didn’t turn out.

Draft Misses

Dwayne Haskins

A player I hate putting on this list is the late Dwayne Haskins, however, if you just look at his career he didn’t turn out like you would expect the 15th overall pick should. He lasted only two seasons in Washington and finished with 14 interceptions and only 12 touchdowns. After his time in Washington, he spent one season in Pittsburgh where he was inactive for all but one game.

Daniel Jones

Another first-round pick who has struggled so far in his career is Daniel Jones who the New York Giants took with the sixth overall pick. Over his three seasons with the team has thrown 29 interceptions while having a quarterback rating of only 84.3. These are just two of the reasons New York has refused to pick up his fifth-year option.

Ryan Finley

After being drafted in the fourth round Ryan Finley only lasted two seasons in the NFL. During his two years, he completed a below-average 49% of his passes and four interceptions on just 119 pass attempts.

Will Grier

The Carolina Panthers selected Will Grier with the 100th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, and it can be 100% guaranteed they wish they went in a different direction with this pick. Grier has only played in two games during his NFL career both of which resulted in his team being blown out. He is currently the third-string quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, so hopefully, he can still develop into at least a backup.
