The newly named Washington Commanders may have had the most disappointing season of the four last year. They were conference champions the year prior and looked to build off of that success. Key injuries riddled their team at the most inopportune moments killing their chances for a playoff spot.

This off season, they traded for an NFC East familiar face in quarterback Carson Wentz, and eyed the NFL Draft for some additional firepower to their already budding young stars. Everyone knew the Commanders were eyeing a receiver in the first-round but they made a peculiar move to trade down with the New Orleans Saints, who then took a top wide receiver prospect.

Even after trading back, the Commanders took Jahan Dotson, who may have been considered best available, but was most likely going to be a second-day pick. Washington’s true value came on day three when they were able to get a bit more bang for their buck.

Overall Grade: B-

Best Selection: Sam Howell

This was an easy pick to make. Sam Howell was a projected first rounder before the 2021 college football season. Despite his woes throughout the season, the Commanders got a solid QB2 in the fifth round. Howell is an above average athlete at the quarterback position, not to mention that he throws the intermediate ball with the best of them. If Carson Wentz continues to be inconsistent, something that has plagued him the last two years, don’t be surprised if Howell takes some first team reps during the 2022 season.
