The Chargers made their biggest move of the offseason by acquiring the four-time all-pro Khalil Mack from the Chicago Bears, in exchange for the No. 48 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Given how close the Chargers are to breaking through, and the fact that their quarterback and left tackle are both top-five at their respective positions, while under rookie contracts, this move was a savvy one by the front office.
They entered the draft with only one real major need — right tackle. In the first round, the Chargers chose Zion Johnson, an offensive lineman out of Boston College. Johnson played predominantly on the interior and figures to remain there in the NFL. It may look bold to pass on Trevor Penning, but Johnson is the best guard in the entire class and will bring a noticeable difference to the unit, regardless of who lands at right tackle.
With the rest of their picks they brought in: a safety with starter-upside, addressed each side of the trenches, snagged a couple developmental corners, and added a backup running back capable of serving the early-down role in the offense. I would call this another good draft class from Tom Telesco.
