Seattle Seahawks 2022 NFL Mock Draft: Round 5, Pick 153

Pick Analysis. Verone McKinley III. 820. Scouting Report. S. Oregon. 153. player

Jamal Adams and Quandre Diggs will be the starters at safety for the Seattle Seahawks, but the team could use more depth in the form of a player who has the versatility to play multiple roles in the secondary. Verone McKinley III has the ability to play either safety position and can line up as a nickel alongside Adams and Diggs.

McKinley will be an interesting case to follow in the 2022 NFL Draft. On paper, he shouldn’t be in the NFL conversation. He’s undersized and his speed is average as well. However, the game tape tells a different story. One of a player that has the ability to compete well in the NFL.

McKinley makes up for his size and speed with football IQ. He’s a smart player with a high motor. His instincts and ability to read the quarterback give him a jump start that closes the speed gap.

The concern at the NFL level will be how all of that translates. While he was able to effectively close those gaps at the collegiate level, it will be harder to do that in the NFL. Placing him behind Adams and Diggs will give him the chance to learn while getting game experience in the nickel and other aspects of the game.
