This trade offer isn’t as exciting as the first deal, but it might be enough to peak the interest of Cleveland while not breaking the bank for Seattle. Both sides would come away with pieces for the future.
From the perspective of the Cleveland Browns, adding more draft capital in 2023 might be the route the team is interested in taking. The trade for Deshaun Watson cost Cleveland their first and third round picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, meaning another second round pick could go a long way for this team.
As for Seattle, they already hold two picks in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, so they’ll take two players before the second round even comes around. While having a second pick is valuable, it will help knowing that it isn’t as costly due to the other picks they hold.
The one hang up with this deal is Cleveland’s trajectory. Are the Browns concerned about adding future assets or do they want immediate impact from any Mayfield deal? Delaying the return a season could get a higher draft pick in return, but if the Browns are only looking at a run in 2022, then this wouldn’t be the deal to offer.
