Detroit Lions Free Agent Target #4: Mike Hughes, CB

The Detroit Lions gave up the third-most receiving touchdowns during the 2021 season, surrendering 31. Only the Washington Football Team and Indianapolis Colts allowed more. The Lions need to invest in their secondary this offseason if they want to contend.

A former first round pick by the Minnesota Vikings, Mike Hughes struggled in Minnesota. However, he saw a bit of a revival last season in Kansas City. Hughes tallied a career-high 47 tackles in Kansas City. Where Hughes shined, though, was creating turnovers. He had just one interception, but forced an impressive four fumbles.

The main concern with Hughes would be keeping him on the field. He played all 17 games in 2021, but he’s missed a good amount in past seasons. He played in just four during the 2020 campaign. Over his first three seasons he missed a total of 24 games. Hopefully, that’s behind him.

Hughes just turned 25-years old, so there’s plenty of football still ahead of him. Detroit needs young players to build around for the future and Hughes would fit into that window. The Lions can pair him with Jeff Okudah and have two young, up-and-coming corners. While the Lions have to be smart with how they spend their money, adding Hughes would be an area where paying a bit more would make sense.
