Round 2, 55th Overall: Cameron Thomas, EDGE, San Diego State

Chandler Jones is likely going to be moving on from the Arizona Cardinals, so they’ll have to find a way to replace his double-digit yearly sack totals. While Arizona could try to address this position in free agency, they’d probably have to pay a premium price for an elite pass rusher, and their salary cap situation likely won’t permit that.

So, they grab the edge rusher out of San Diego State, Cameron Thomas. Not many have been talking about Thomas, as he played his games in the Mountain West conference, but he was a key part of San Diego State’s 11-2 season this past year. He led the Mountain West in sacks with 11.5 and was named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

What’s more, the 6’5” 270-pound Cameron Thomas racked up 20 tackles for loss this past year, good for 15th in the nation. He is a former defensive tackle who moved outside this in 2021 and saw his productivity explode. Some people are comparing Thomas to current Cardinals pass rusher J.J. Watt, and others have tabbed him the “Aidan Hutchinson of the Mountain West.” While those are lofty players to be compared to, Thomas has a legit shot at being a difference maker on a Cardinals defense that desperately needs one with the likely departure of Chandler Jones.
