Round 2, 51st Overall: Nicholas Petit-Frere, OT, Ohio State

The additional middle round picks were what made this trade so appealing to the Carolina Panthers, as they can address their offensive line issues and provide some much-needed protection for Darnold and Willis, who is their future franchise quarterback in this scenario.

Nicholas Petit-Frere is considered a first-round talent by some evaluators, and he should be able to slide in at either tackle spot and play right away. He has prototypical size for an NFL tackle (6’5” 315) and has the pedigree to boot; he was a 5-star prospect out of Tampa and full-time starter for the Buckeyes the last two years. He was also named a second team All-American in 2021.

He has a solid frame and good length that he can use to control opposing pass rushers. His athleticism really shines through when he moves laterally, and he’s shown the ability to recover when he appears to be beaten. His pass sets are often smooth, and he displays nice fluidity in his hips. Petit-Frere would thrive in a zone blocking scheme and Carolina might want to incorporate some of those concepts with Willis and their current star running back Christian McCaffrey.

For Carolina, nabbing the first team All-Big Ten selection Petit-Frere in the second round is a steal and they should be able to use him well right out of the gate.
