Los Angeles Chargers Offseason Needs: Run Defense Tops The List
Corner
As important as finding more receiving threats for the offense is to keep pace with the Buffalo Bills, Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals and more, it’s important to have a great group of corners to feel comfortable when in nickel. In the future of the AFC, you’re going to be as good as your CB3.
The Los Angeles Chargers did draft Samuel Jr. in the second round last year, but they can’t afford to stand pat at the position. Michael Davis is their other current starter on the outside, but there isn’t much depth at all.
The free agent pool offers plenty of solutions. They could always look to bring Chris Harris Jr. back to play the slot, or bring back familiar face Casey Hayward, who had a very good season in Vegas with the Raiders. Staley has probably seen the success Rasul Douglas has had in a similar system, and the opportunistic play of his will be important wherever he goes. Darious Williams was successful under Staley with the Rams. Levi Wallace has experience in zone coverage as well.
The 2022 NFL Draft is very deep should the Los Angeles Chargers look there early and often as well. Andrew Booth Jr. is extremely successful in off-coverage, and has the unreal ball skills to boot. Trent McDuffie may be a little smaller, but he’s coverage-versatile, plays with a hot motor, and will rally to tackle from anywhere on the field. If they wait a bit, McDuffie’s teammate, Kyler Gordon, would be an option as well. Don’t rule out the double dip in this draft depending on what happens in free agency.
