The Detroit Lions can afford to get better on the back end. While the cornerback room should be better in 2022, especially with Jeffrey Okudah returning, along with (hopefully) Jerry Jacobs. With Ifeatu Melifonwu and Amani Oruwariye in the room as well, it’s unlikely the Lions look at corner until day three.

Safety, however, is a different story. It would be great if Tracy Walker returns, but it can still get a lot better. The safety group wasn’t dynamite in Mobile outside of Jalen Pitre, but Yusuf Corker is an interesting name to watch for the Lions on day three of the 2022 NFL Draft.

Corker played all over for the Wildcats, and did very well against SEC competition in 2021. He’s primarily a free safety, with the instincts and recognition skill to handle a deep half and potentially single high. Corker also works in the box and as a robber where he’s reliable as a tackler. The closing speed also shows up on film when he’s asked to blitz.

A versatile safety helps out a defense in so many ways, and that’s what Yusuf Corker can do for the Lions. He could see starting reps as a rookie if the Lions are indeed the team who drafts him.
