NFL: Predicting the week one starting quarterback for all 32 teams
By Kyle Edmond
New York Jets: Zach Wilson
Given the circumstances with the New York Jets, Zach Wilson didn’t do too bad in his rookie season. He led the league in sack yards, losing 370, and the weapons weren’t great, but there were flashes from Wilson and that will be enough for now.
Wilson showed chemistry with fellow rookie Elijah Moore and the duo should be able to grow together moving forward. The Jets just need to continue this rebuild around Wilson and everything could play out.
Wilson did have some normal rookie quarterback hiccups, like throwing more interceptions, 11, than he did touchdowns, nine. Now, he did rush for four touchdowns so he was still able to score more times than he threw the ball to the other team.
Like Trevor Lawrence in Jacksonville, the Jets have too much capital invested to move on from Wilson after one season. Like I said, there were flashes and the rough edges will work themselves out in time, especially after a full offseason in this system.
He still hasn’t set in stone that he can be the guy for the Jets, but there’s clear potential. If the Jets can find him a few more weapons and cut down on the sacks and yards lost to sacks, Wilson could have a solid sophomore season in 2022.
