NFL: Predicting the week one starting quarterback for all 32 teams
By Kyle Edmond
Los Angeles Chargers: Justin Herbert
Entering the 2020 NFL Draft Justin Herbert had a ton of question marks surrounding his game. There was cause for concern about his transition to the NFL and he didn’t even truly “win” the starting job, but had to step up when injury woes removed Tyrod Taylor from the competition. Now, with two years under his belt, Herbert has silenced most critics and is only getting started.
Herbert won the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2020 and with a new head coach in year two he continued to grow. (Good sign for Trevor Lawrence fans). The record wasn’t quite where fans will want it to be, but it was growth nonetheless.
The next task for Herbert will be cutting down on his interceptions. He threw 15 this past season, five more than his rookie year. Now, he had nearly 100 more attempts so you can expect a few more picks, but it’s more than that. He went from one interception every 59.5 passing attempts to an interception every 44.8 passing attempts.
Herbert is still very young with a bright future. The growing pains are to be expected. If the Chargers can continue to add pieces around him while his contract is cheap, LA could have two Super Bowl contenders in a short period of time.
