Trey McBride, TE, Colorado State: 2022 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Strengths
Trey McBride has NFL size at a solid 6’4” 260 pounds. What’s even more impressive is that he came to campus at Fort Collins at 240 pounds and put in the work to get stronger without sacrificing much of his speed or athleticism.
He’s excellent at tracking the ball in the air. More than once on film Trey McBride was able to make the catch on a pass that was tipped by a defender. He’s shown tremendous concentration when the ball is thrown to him.
McBride has a wrestling background, and it shows when he’s blocking. He’s a very physical player and adeptly uses his thick lower body to win at the point of attack in the running game. His willingness to block and ferociousness when doing so is what really sets him apart from the other tight ends in the 2022 NFL Draft class.
He’s also good at making catches outside the frame of his body and in traffic. With skill, Trey McBride has shown he can make catches on balls thrown high and reel in passes with defenders bearing down on him. He also uses his body well to shield defenders and give his quarterback an opening to find him.
After the catch Trey McBride is a bruising runner. He led the country in yards after the catch this year for tight ends with 456. He loves contact and will lower his shoulder to gain extra yards. When he gets a head of steam at a muscular 260 pounds, he’s a nightmare for defenders to bring down.
His intangibles might make the difference in fortifying his case as TE1 in the 2022 NFL Draft. As mentioned in a previous slide, Trey McBride was named to the academic all-conference team for the Mountain West. His intelligence shows on the football field too as he’s able to make combination blocks at the second and third levels of the defense, in addition to using angles and leverage to get open on passing plays.
If that wasn’t enough, he was also named a team captain at Colorado State and elected to come back for his senior year when he could have easily declared for the draft last year after the COVID-shortened 2020 season.
