Trey McBride, the nation’s best tight end, showed out this season, topping 1,000 receiving yards, winning the Mackey Award, and solidifying his 2022 NFL Draft stock.

Before the 2021 college football season, many pundits were high on tight ends like Texas A&M’s Jalen Wydermyer and Iowa State’s Charlie Kolar. Both of those players will likely hear their names called in the first few rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft. But the Mackey Award (given to the nation’s best tight end) winner was Colorado State’s Trey McBride. The 6’4” 260-pound senior was a consensus and unanimous All-American, and he was named to all five major All-American teams.

McBride’s production in 2021 was marked with consistency. He had at least four catches in every game and his lowest yardage total in any contest was 44 yards against Utah State. His receiving numbers were elite (90 catches, 1,121 yards) while his red zone numbers left a bit to be desired (only one receiving touchdown).

It’s easy to see why scouts are excited about McBride, he has the requisite size, speed, and hands to become an exceptional pass catcher. His athleticism and ability to make difficult and contested catches is supremely evident on film.

But he’s not a glorified wide receiver like some tight ends in the NFL. He can and will make effective blocks in the running game, isn’t afraid to get his hands dirty, and doesn’t limit his blocking to trying to blow up smaller players. He’s a willing blocker and will eagerly try to kick out defensive ends and linebackers on running plays.

2022 NFL Draft Scouting Report: Trey McBride

The comp I keep seeing for Trey McBride is Mark Andrews, the former Oklahoma tight end and current Baltimore Raven, and I think it’s an apt one. The floor for Trey McBride in the 2022 NFL Draft is likely the beginning of the third round, with some draftniks projecting him to be selected on day one of the 2022 NFL Draft. But before we begin analyzing him, let’s take a look at how the first unanimous All-American in the history of the Colorado State football program got to this point.
