Dallas Cowboys 7-Round 2022 NFL Mock Draft: Improving The Defense
By Evan Bachman
Round 1, 24th Overall: Jordan Davis, DL, Georgia
I have had Jordan Davis going to the Dallas Cowboys in many of my previous mock drafts and there’s no change in this mock draft. It’s a fit that I really like because the Cowboys have a need at defensive tackle and Davis is likely to be the only defensive tackle to come off the board round one.
Jordan Davis was one of many stars on a Georgia defense that was the most dominant college football has seen in a while. He’s someone whose value and impact on a game goes beyond just what you see in the box score.
He is very powerful and can drive offensive linemen backwards and get them off balance. As a run defender, he is very good at recognizing where the run is going and driving linemen out of the way (or in the way of the run to stop it) to either free himself up to make a tackle or someone else.
Adding Jordan Davis would fill what is probably the biggest positional need the Cowboys have, as they lack a true run-stuffer in the middle of the defense.
Round 2, 56th Overall: Chad Muma, LB, Wyoming
Linebacker was a strong spot for the Dallas Cowboys this season, however with the possibility that Parsons will play more snaps at edge rusher and Leighton Vander Esch being a free agent it could become a need for them.
Chad Muma was simply a tackling machine and playmaker for Wyoming this past season and has seen his draft stock shoot up because of it.
Muma is a fantastic run defender as he racked up total of 142 tackles this season in 13 games. He also displayed his abilities in coverage as he picked off three passes and returned two of them for touchdowns.
Round 3, 88th Overall: Smoke Monday, S, Auburn
With Jayon Kearse, Damontae Kazee, Keanu Neal, and Malik Hooker all being free agents, safety is a priority for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.
Smoke Monday would be another solid addition to this defense. He’s not necessarily elite at any one thing, but he’s really solid all around as he’s got good instincts against both the run and the pass and has good closing speed.
Another plus Monday offers is he’s a versatile defender, he’s a safety but at Auburn he lined up all over the field as he took 190 plus snaps from the box, the slot, and free safety.
