Kellen Moore: Offensive Coordinator, Dallas Cowboys

The breakout candidate throughout this season for a head coaching job has been Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Before beginning his coaching career in 2018, Moore spent six seasons in the league as a backup quarterback for the Detroit Lions and the Dallas Cowboys.

Following his retirement after the 2017-18 season, the Dallas Cowboys hired Moore to be their quarterbacks coach. After his first season as the team’s quarterback coach, Moore was promoted to the offensive coordinator position. Under Moore as offensive coordinator Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dak Prescott appeared to take the next step in his development and play like a top-10 quarterback.

A team that relied on a run-heavy offense and limited mistakes in the passing game had transitioned to a more balanced offense that could compete in shootouts due to the emergence of Prescott and the passing attack. Moore’s work with the offense was impressive enough to be retained by Mike McCarthy when he took over for Jason Garrett as the team’s head coach. McCarthy has let Moore have total control of the team’s offense over the last two seasons.

If Moore was to land a head coaching job this offseason he would overtake Sean McVay as the youngest head coach currently in the NFL. That could be appealing for the Jacksonville Jaguars to pair a young head coach with the youngest roster in the league because they can grow together. This roster may respond better to a younger less accomplished coach especially after their treatment by their former head coach who had an established resume and had unfair expectations of a roster that went 1-15 the year prior.

Moore may not be able to turn this team around immediately due to his lack of coaching experience. However, he could improve this offense from this past season and continue to grow it as the year goes on. Lawrence should take the next step in his development, which shouldn’t be a huge jump considering how poor he played this season. He can put Lawrence in situations to feel comfortable and grow into the quarterback that many believe he could be.
