2022 NFL Draft: 5 coaches who could be fired before the 2022 NFL Draft
By Kyle Edmond
Joe Judge, New York Giants
The New York Giants just can’t seem to get their head coach right. Since they won the Super Bowl at the end of the 2011 season, the Giants have had just two winning seasons and one playoff appearance. They went 9-7 in 2012 and then 11-5 in 2016, making the wild card. Other than that, it’s been a tough ride.
After winning the Super Bowl, Tom Coughlin went 28-36 over the next four seasons. Coughlin was replaced by Ben McAdoo who made the playoffs in his first season at 11-5. However, a 3-13 regression the next season resulted in the Giants’ owning the second pick in the draft and a change at head coach. Pat Shurmur entered the scene for two seasons, going a combined 9-23. Now, it’s been Joe Judge.
A two-year cycle isn’t a great habit to get into with head coaches, but the New York Giants might not be left with much of a choice. McAdoo and Shurmur each had just two seasons and Judge could very well join the list.
Last year, the 6-10 finish for the Giants was good enough for a second place finish in the division and the team’s best record since making the playoffs in 2016. Plus, that all came with a banged up Saquon Barkley. Now, the team has once again regressed.
Like Rhule, Judge could be given the benefit of the doubt due to injuries. The quarterback play has been some of the worst in the history of the league with Daniel Jones out, Barkley is once again hurt and the wide receivers were continually depleted throughout the season. But this is New York and they expect better results.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see Judge get one more year, but it’s really a 50/50 split. An argument could be made either way, but don’t be shocked to see the Giants hire yet another new head coach prior to the 2022 NFL Draft.
