2022 NFL Draft: 5 teams that need to find a quarterback this offseason
By Kyle Edmond
Washington Football Team
The Washington Football Team found themselves in a similar situation as the Houston Texans this season, but managed to pull together a few more wins. Heading into the season it was going to be the Ryan Fitzpatrick offense, but injuries forced the return of Taylor Heinicke to under center in Washington.
Heinicke played decent this season and could continue to fill the role moving forward if needed, but he isn’t a long-term solution. Washington, though, is still trying to figure out how to recover from the loss of Kirk Cousins and biting this year on a quarterback could just make matters worse.
Since Cousins left, Alex Smith has been Washington’s leading passer over the course of a season twice. Another season belongs to Case Keenum and this year is Heinicke. That doesn’t include time at quarterback for Fitzpatrick, Haskins, Colt McCoy, Kyle Allen, Garrett Gilbert, Josh Johnson and even Mark Sanchez over the four-year span.
Of the teams on this list, Washington might have the worst pain at the position over the last few years. It’s been a rotating door and unless they make a move this offseason, there’s no telling when that door could close. They have short-term options, but until a player is added either via the 2022 NFL Draft or a trade, the long-term outlook is murky in Washington.
