Round 1, 19th Overall: Sam Howell, QB, North Carolina

As previously stated, the quarterback situation isn’t great right now for the Carolina Panthers. They have Darnold under contract for $18 million next season, and while some may harp on patience for him due to line issues, it’s time to move on. A veteran seems unlikely unless they come cheap. Someone like Marcus Mariota could make sense. Otherwise, turning to the draft is the best answer.

We can talk about the quality of this class for another four months, but it’s likely someone from this group finds success in the NFL. Here, the Panthers roll with an in-state prospect, Tar Heels quarterback Sam Howell.

Howell had a prolific 2020 season throwing the football to Dyami Brown, Dazz Newsome, and running backs Michael Carter and Javonte Williams. With so much turnover in 2021 and a rough offensive line, Howell struggled to start the season. He made a strong turnaround late and unlocked a rushing element of his game that surprised many.

Howell plays with great toughness and has the mobility to scramble and buy time. His touch and velocity are impressive, and he throws a great deep ball. Howell can make throws on the move as well and his rushing production has already been emphasized. The decision making and process needs to be sped up, but he will have weapons in Carolina to work with in year one.
