Round 1, 10th Overall: Ikem Ekwonu, OT, North Carolina State

The big question for the Carolina Panthers will be deciding between the line and quarterback in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. They currently have a top 10 pick which could help them land a top quarterback in the class. However, with the aforementioned long leash, weaker quarterback class, and potential available vets, opting to look elsewhere makes the most sense.

The Panthers haven’t selected an offensive lineman in the first round since Jeff Otah in 2008, but that changes right here. They stay in-state with this selection, drafting Wolfpack tackle Ikem Ekwonu.

Ekwonu entered the season projected as someone who would likely move inside when he made the jump to the NFL, but analysts have started to have a change of heart on that projection. Ekwonu has been dominant on the NC State offensive line, and according to an ESPN graphic, recorded 63 pancakes prior to the UNC rivalry game on Saturday.

His power at the point of attack, heavy hands, and willingness to finish on every play is evident. Ekwonu fires off the ball quickly for his size as well when down blocking or when he’s asked to lead the charge in space. As a pass protector, he’s improved with his footwork and has incredible grip strength to latch on when he gains leverage. Ekwonu could be the Panthers left tackle for a long time.
