Desmond Ridder is a polarizing QB prospect for the 2022 NFL Draft, but he made a statement in Cincinnati’s win over SMU.

There might not be a more polarizing prospect right now in 2022 NFL Draft circles than Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder. Ridder has gotten big praise from bigger media outlets, as he ended up as the top quarterback on Bleacher Report’s initial 2022 big board. Others still have their questions, including here at NFL Mocks, where he hasn’t been on recent top 100s. In a weak quarterback class, Ridder has the arm talent, big time throws, and athleticism to build upon and become a great quarterback.

However, it hasn’t been smooth sailing in 2021. For some, Ridder hasn’t gotten much better in his time with the Bearcats, as he’s still has big accuracy lapses on short throws, and some rough footwork and decisions against pressure. Missing the layups and roping everyone in with a couple big time NFL throws has been the 2021 theme for Ridder so far.

His game against SMU, a game that was important for the Bearcats College Football Playoff hopes, perhaps put analysts and draft fans on notice. Ridder had his best game of the season Saturday versus the Mustangs, completing 17 of 23 passing for 274 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 46 yards and a score and even caught a touchdown pass. The passing numbers weren’t gaudy, but his accuracy looked a lot better, he stayed in rhythm, and hit those big time throws down the field when he could, especially to receiver Alec Pierce.

It is just one game, but it’s one that Desmond Ridder can feel good about when discussing his 2022 NFL Draft hopes. In a weak class, seeing big performances in big games is what scouts and teams like to see. If he can stay hot, and put together a good game in the playoff against a top program, who knows how things could shake out in Las Vegas in April. He made a statement today, hopefully one that’s indicative of what’s to come.
