Nine Teams that could take a quarterback early in the 2022 NFL Draft
Houston Texans
There are some people who may believe the Houston Texans have exceeded expectations by starting their season with a 1-5 record. After an atrocious offseason, the Houston Texans were on the rock bottom of everyone’s power rankings. They were the favorite to land the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. This offseason Houston hired former New England Patriots executive Nick Caserio to be their new general manager and former Ravens wide receiver coach David Culley to be their new head coach. They attempted to put together a roster with the limited resources they had. Houston was without their first and second-round picks and had limited cap space. So they signed multiple veteran players to one-year deals to fill out this roster.
Former Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson had a falling out with the team when his opinion wasn’t considered by management when they were in the head coach hiring process. Watson demand a trade from Houston, but the Texans refused to move him. They did sign veteran Tyrod Taylor to a one-year deal that could be worth up to $12.5 million as an insurance policy in case Watson did not play with Houston this year. Then later in the offseason, multiple reports of off-the-field legal issues pertaining to Watson were made public. Houston then made Watson available and the team refused to start him or activate him for games this season.
Their veteran insurance policy Tyrod Taylor was named the starter. Despite only starting one game in two seasons Taylor looked great. In Week 1 Taylor and the Texans dominated the Jaguars. He completed 21 of his 33 passes for 291 passing yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed four times for 40 yards. Then the following week Taylor completed 10 of his 11 passes for 125 yards and a passing touchdown. He also rushed for a 15-yard touchdown, but on that run, Taylor tweaked his hamstring that held him out of the rest of the game. After the game, he was placed on injured reserve.
Taylor was replaced by rookie quarterback Davis Mills. Houston drafted Mills out of Stanford with their first selection in the 2021 NFL Draft in the third round. In relief of Taylor, Mills completed 8 of his 18 passes for 102 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. Since then Mills has completed 66.2% of his passes for an average of 202.5 passing yards per game, thrown four touchdowns, and six interceptions. That included one of the worst performances by a quarterback in NFL history that happened in Week Four against the Buffalo Bills.
Houston has a lot of holes across this roster they could go with just about any position in the first round and as long as the player’s talent lines up with the pick value it is a great pick. But quarterback must be looming on the mind of Houston. If Mills does not show any improvement throughout the season they need a new long-term option at the position. Tyrod Taylor or another veteran quarterback could be a solid bridge quarterback until a young quarterback is ready. But Houston will need to take a quarterback early in the 2022 NFL Draft to be the future of the franchise if Mills doesn’t improve.
