Detroit Lions

Six weeks into the season the Detroit Lions are the last winless team. The Lions did not have high expectations coming into the season. They made some major franchise-changing moves hiring Brad Holmes as their new general manager, hiring Dan Campbell as their new head coach, and trading franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford. Detroit traded Stafford to the Rams for a package that included the Los Angeles Rams’ first round pick from the 2022 NFL Draft. They also acquired Los Angeles’ 2023 first round pick and former first overall pick Jared Goff.

So far Goff has played well with Detroit. Despite all of the hate he received during the end of his tenure in Los Angeles and during the offseason, Goff isn’t an awful quarterback. He has completed 66.8% of his passes for an average of 217.2 passing yards per game and has thrown seven touchdowns and only three interceptions. Goff has been efficient enough to run this offense. He is not much better or worse than he was with the Rams. Goff can do exactly what is asked of him, however, he won’t elevate the weapons around him.

New head coach Dan Campbell and offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn have made running the ball their focus on offense. They have also feature running backs D’Andre Swift, Jamaal Williams, and tight end T.J. Hockenson as the focal points of this offense in the passing game over their lackluster group of wide receivers.

The Lions appear to believe in Goff. It was not too long ago that he was the first overall pick in 2016. Then a few years later he helped lead the Rams offense to the Super Bowl becoming the youngest quarterback in NFL history to start in the Super Bowl. He was a Pro Bowler in his second and third seasons. Goff threw for 3,800+ yards and 28 touchdowns in 2017-18 then 4,600+ yards and 32 touchdowns in 2018-19. However, if Goff doesn’t do anything to show this staff that he could still be a franchise quarterback they should explore the option of taking a quarterback in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Detroit’s biggest weakness is on defense They really should take the best player available with both their first-round picks whether it is two defensive players who can become cornerstones of this franchise or a defensive player and a number one wide receiver. But if Detroit finishes near the bottom of the league in standings and finds a quarterback they believe could be the future of the franchise they should pull the trigger with their first of their two first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft. Then take the best player available with their other first-round pick they acquired from the Los Angeles Rams.
