Philadelphia Eagles

At this point of the season, it is unclear in what direction the Philadelphia Eagles appear to be headed. The Eagles have lost three straight after an impressive victory over the Falcons in Week 1. Later this year it will be clear whether the Eagles will build upon what they have on the current roster or blow it up completely. Philadelphia has the capital to start a full rebuild.

They could have three first-round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft depending on the performance of Carson Wentz and the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles traded Wentz to the Colts for a package of draft picks that included a conditional second-round pick. That second-round pick turns into a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft if Wentz plays 75% of the Colts’ snaps or 70% of the Colts’ snaps and they make the playoffs.

If the Eagles land three first-round picks and/or have a pick in the top-10 in the 2022 NFL Draft they have to consider taking a quarterback. They have a new head coach this season in Nick Sirianni who didn’t choose their current starter Jalen Hurts. They also have refused to commit to him past this season. Philadelphia flirted with the idea of acquiring Deshaun Watson before the season.

Philadelphia also refused to name Hurts the starter despite how well he played at the end of last season and his competition being Joe Flacco who is way past his prime. Shortly after naming Hurts the starter the Eagles acquired former Jaguars starter Gardner Minshew for a conditional sixth-round pick. That pick would turn into a fifth-round pick if he plays more than 50% of the snaps in three games this season.

On the season Hurts has completed 62.5% of his passes averaging 246.7 yards passing yards per game. He’s also thrown eight touchdowns and four interceptions. He also has 300 yards rushing on 53 attempts and five rushing touchdowns. At times it appears that Hurts has shown growth as a passer from last season. Then at other times, it appears that Hurts seems lost when running the offense. In a majority of the Eagles’ games this season, this offense and team have looked sloppy and haven’t looked great.

The Eagles are on weird grounds with Hurts because since they drafted him they have not stated their plan for him. He was drafted as an insurance policy in case Wentz didn’t play great. Then this season he feels like the best quarterback on the roster, but the vibe is that he isn’t going to be the starter for the long haul. If that is the case Philadelphia is a candidate to take a quarterback in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft if they believe that player will be the future of the franchise.
