Denver Broncos

The team with the least consistency from the quarterback position over the last couple of seasons has been the Denver Broncos. When Teddy Bridgewater was named the starting quarterback for the Broncos for Week 1 he became the tenth quarterback to start a game for the Denver Broncos since Peyton Manning (excluding the Kendall Hinton game). He was also the fifth different quarterback Denver has started in the season opener in the last five years.

Denver acquired Bridgewater from the Carolina Panthers for a 2021 sixth-round pick shortly after Carolina acquired Sam Darnold. Bridgewater competed with Drew Lock for the starting job and ultimately won it by the end of the preseason.

Bridgewater has played well enough to get Denver to a 3-0 start. But the Broncos have now lost their last three games. He’s completed 70.2%  of his passes which is among the best in the league. Bridgewater has averaged 289.8 passing yards per game in the five games he finished. He also completed 72.5% of his passes in those games, threw nine touchdowns, four interceptions.

In the last two weeks, it seems that the offense has allowed Bridgwater to play more aggressively than he had the previous four. He has still completed a large percentage of his passes and recorded his third and second highest passing yard totals of the season to date. But Bridgewater has thrown all four of his interceptions on the year the past two weeks. More importantly, Denver lost two games they could have possibly won.

When Denver acquired Bridgewater from Carolina they reworked his deal to make it a one-year $11.5 million deal. So Denver cannot bank on Bridgewater being the team’s starter past this season. There is a good chance Denver gets involved in acquiring Aaron Rodgers or Deshaun Watson this offseason. They could be attracted to Denver because they have a win-now roster.

But if they cannot land star quarterbacks in a trade they could consider taking a quarterback in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Even if they finish the season with a good record they could take a quarterback at the end of the first round to develop behind a veteran bridge quarterback like Bridgewater.
