22. New York Giants (via Chicago Bears): Jordan Davis, Defensive Tackle, Georgia

Now that the Chicago Bears have a winning record the trade they made with the Giants during last year’s draft doesn’t look so lopsided. The Chicago Bears traded the 20th overall pick along with their first-round selection in 2022 to the Giants for the 11th overall pick to take their potential franchise quarterback Justin Fields. New York made that deal because their target DeVonta Smith was off the board. The Giants were able to land the wide receiver they wanted next on their board Kadarius Toney with the 20th pick.

A huge loss for the Giants defense from a season ago was defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson. The former second-round pick was the team’s nose tackle and a huge reason why their defensive line was so dominant upfront. Now that Tomlinson is in Minnesota the Giants’ defensive line is struggling, especially against the run.

Fortunately for David Gettleman, his favorite school to draft from has an incredible run-stuffing nose tackle who will be in this year’s draft class. Every year since taking over as the general manager of the New York Giants Gettleman has drafted at least one player from Georgia. He took Lorenzo Carter in the third round in 2018, Deandre Baker in the first round of 2019, Andrew Thomas in the first round of 2020, Tae Crowder in the seventh round of 2020, and Azeez Ojulari in the second round in 2021.

Jordan Davis has been extremely underrated this season, and he’s the selection in this 2022 NFL Mock Draft. He is a monster defensive tackle and an elite talent. However, teams don’t value nose tackles very high as prospects. Teams won’t take a defensive tackle early in the draft unless he has shown the ability to rush the passer. Davis can fill the void left by Dalvin Tomlinson and help this defensive line become the strength of the New York Giants once again. David Gettleman loves his defensive linemen and linebackers and it would be hard to imagine him overlooking Jordan Davis in the 2022 NFL draft.
