2022 NFL Mock Draft: Matt Corral becomes the future in Atlanta
12. New York Jets (via Seattle Seahawks): Andrew Booth Jr., Cornerback, Clemson
No one ever roots for an injury, especially to a fan favorite like Russell Wilson. But the New York Jets are a huge benefactor to the injury Wilson suffered that will hold him out to likely six to eight weeks because they have Seattle’s first-round pick. If they get a top-15 pick from Seattle they could land an extremely talented cornerback prospect to bolster that position group.
Coming into the season the New York Jets cornerback group was the weakest overall position group in the league. Statistically, the Jets cornerbacks are not the worst in the league. But they are lacking a notable cornerback who can cover a team’s number one receiver on a given week. It is imperative that the Jets draft cornerbacks early and often in this extremely deep cornerback group.
One of the more exciting prospects coming into the season was Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. He is extremely raw as a player, but has shown great flashes when he’s been on the field. Booth Jr. is a playmaker. Last season Booth Jr. only started four of the eleven games he played in. He had 30 tackles, four pass breakups, two interceptions, a sack, and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.
This season Booth Jr. may not have turnovers he had last season (yet). But he has shown that he is capable of being a starting cornerback at the next level and a potentially great one. Booth Jr. would be going to New York who is coached by a great defensive mind in Robert Saleh. He could be relied upon to cover Stefon Diggs and Jaylen Waddle twice a year. On top of that this would be the second playmaking defensive back the Jets would be adding from this 2022 NFL Draft class.
