Kentucky QB Will Levis

There wasn’t much buzz surrounding Kentucky quarterback Will Levis before the season, but there is now. A 6-0 start for an SEC school and wins over Florida and LSU will do that. Levis is a 6’3” 232-pound quarterback who began his career at Penn State. He redshirted there then backed up current Nittany Lions QB Sean Clifford before earning his degree and transferring to Kentucky and winning the starting job prior to this season.

What captures the attention of scouts ahead of the 2022 NFL Draft are his size and tools. Levis has the size you’d want in a quarterback, and he’s shown the ability to run the ball as well, tallying 636 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in 20 games between Penn State and Kentucky. Zone reads and run-pass-option concepts would nicely utilize Will Levis’ skill set, which could pique the interest of NFL teams who run those schemes.

In addition to being a great athlete at his size, Will Levis can sling it too. He’s able to generate good velocity on his throws and can fit the ball into tight windows. His mechanics are solid, which is something that NFL talent evaluators specifically look for, and he can make use of his athleticism by getting outside of the pocket on bootlegs and when the play’s structure breaks down. He’ll have to work on his pocket presence and his ability to read defenses, as he’s been a bit mistake prone throughout his career (14-8 touchdown-interception ratio).

The LSU tape for Levis was impressive. He had one of his best games statistically with as many touchdown passes as incompletions (three) and 75 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground. But what stuck out to me were his intangibles. Will Levis exhibited elite toughness when running the ball and showed great fiery energy when leading his team. It’s no coincidence that he’s the quarterback of a 6-0 SEC team. And those personality traits combined with his outstanding physical tools make him someone to watch in the lead up to the 2022 NFL Draft.
